Remembrance Showcase

Students from across West Norfolk are preparing to remember the fallen ahead of Armistice Day.

On the 12th November 2019, students from six schools within the West Norfolk Academies Trust will mark the moment the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War as they present a musical showcase. The showcase will not only mark the 101 year anniversary, but is an opportunity for students to commemorate the sacrifice given in all wars that our military have been involved in since 1914.

West Norfolk Academies Trust is a multi-academy trust consisting of four high schools and seven primary schools across West Norfolk. The trust utilises the opportunity to share staff knowledge, resources and skills across its 11 schools and consequently performances such as this are one of the many results of this collaboration.

The event involves primary students from Walpole Cross Keys, Clenchwarton, West Lynn, Heacham, Snettisham and Gaywood schools.  The students will take to the stage at Springwood High School, on November 12th to present inspired songs and poetry as they remember the fallen.

Not only will this event bring the students and parents from across the schools together, but it also signifies how the trust strives to raise standards across all of its sites, by sharing opportunities and staff in order to provide an excellent education for young people in West Norfolk.

Andy Johnson, Executive Headteacher said:

“Despite increased cuts to arts education around the country, we continue to ensure that the arts resources we have in our trust are widespread, so that all of our students have access to arts based subjects and opportunities”.

Students have been preparing for the performance since September with weekly drama and singing sessions. This has enabled the primary schools involved to extend their classroom study of the topic into an expressive arts performance.

Songs include Pack up your Troubles, It’s a Long Way to Tipperary and Keep the Homefires Burning; along with remembrance poetry that the students have been studying and composing in class.

The performance is a bespoke piece and takes the format of each school having ‘their moment’ on stage to present narration, poetry and song. Students from all of the schools will join together at the beginning and end of the performance to collectively perform some of the classic tunes that kept the nation going during the Great War.

The performance is not shy of audience participation. For that part, the students have prepared some surprise elements that include interaction with their guests. But on that matter, staff are silenced by the students to say no more!
